Kinn: Evening Ritual
We read the published research one ingredient at a time.
For a mind that won't settle
The seed of the sour jujube, used in Chinese medicine for over two thousand years. We use a standardised extract, so every sachet carries the same measured amount rather than whatever a batch of raw powder happens to contain.

For calmer evenings
An amino acid your body already makes. Taken before bed it works overnight rather than in the glass. The trials that found an effect used 3g. Most supplements that list glycine use 500mg, a sixth of that.

For tiredness and fatigue
Magnesium bound to an amino acid, which the body absorbs better than the magnesium oxide used in cheaper supplements. An adult woman needs around 270mg a day. One sachet gives 250mg. Most supplements give 150mg.

For taking the edge off
An amino acid found in green tea. It takes the edge off without sedating. Trials have used 200 to 400mg. We use 400.

For skin hydration
The molecule skin uses to hold water, and your body makes less of it as you get older. We use sodium hyaluronate at 120mg, the same form and the same amount as the trial.

For collagen, and your skin
Your body cannot build collagen without it. That is chemistry rather than a claim: without vitamin C the collagen your skin makes does not hold together. 80mg is a full day's intake for an adult. We use sodium ascorbate, a non-acidic form that is gentler in a nightly drink.
Nutrients 2017 · vitamin C and skin
The one everyone expects. It can affect thyroid hormone levels, and thyroid conditions are more common in women, and more common again with age.
A prescription medicine in the UK rather than a supplement, so it was never an option for a nightly drink. It also does a narrower job than most people expect: it shifts the timing of your body clock rather than making you sleepy.
You'll find it in plenty of night-time teas, which blend and sweeten around its smell. The evidence is the problem. People report sleeping better on it, but the effect shrinks in the better-designed trials and doesn't show up when sleep is measured rather than self-reported.
Ten ingredients in total. The other four are natural flavouring, citric and malic acid for the sharpness, stevia, and an anti-caking agent.

Tear one sachet into a glass, add cold water or tonic and ice, or warm water if you'd rather, and stir until it dissolves.
